BIOLOGY - THE COLLAPSE OF THE GREAT LAKES MARINE FOOD WEB  - Mussels, Zebra in shallower water and Quagga in the depths of Lake Michigan changed everything. A half-inch long shrimp, (Diporeia), had been the most abundant lake bottom animal - 7,000 per square meter. It was the critical link between microscopic algae they ate and Great Lakes fisheries they fed. Point source phosphorus controls in late 1970s and 80s had begun to limit algae growth in Lake Michigan.  The loss of Diporeia led to the collapse of the Great Lakes food web.
