After centuries of building dikes, the Dutch adopted a pragmatic approach to rising sea and river levels: living in harmony with water rather than trying to control it. Over thirty ‘Room for the River projects were created to enlarge the drainage capacity of the river during high water - ‘river widening.’ Also the Mounds (aka Terps) Plan. Terps date back to 500 BC to raise farmsteads above the flood plain. Age-old solution to living on terps in flood-prone areas reappeared as a 21st-century solution.
