Great Lakes water came down 17 inches while SE Michigan flooded by 100 year storms and neglected infrastructure - including our home. A 4½ feet flood resulted in utter destruction. Wet furniture, equipment, drywall, and lifetime memories were removed. Dryers removed the damp 5 times until the root cause was solved – a blocked municipal storm drain. DEBATE: Could our area be a climate refuge? YES OR NOT YET, Water could make great lakes a climate refuge. Are we prepared? Ferns, fish, and mammals common to southern forests migrated north 10 miles per year. Will fierce weather cause people to move from danger to safety? Some say warmer winters, ample fresh water, and few wildfires will attract millions of new residents. NOT YET, Great Lakes region is not a ‘climate haven’ Standing tall 600 feet above sea level means we’ll be the winners in a climate lottery. But it’s too soon to buy that ticket. LAKE MI - HURON LOST ALMOST 14 TRILLION GALLONS IN THE PAST YEAR; WHY? The water level of Lake Michigan-Huron declined by lack of precipitation last winter, spring and early summer. The highest water level this year is January 2021; marks only the third time since 1918 for a beginning-of-the-year high water record. WEATHER AND WATER TEMPERATURE  Weather and water temperature interact. Seasonal changes in weather leads to a dramatic change in water temperature causing the water column to mix top to bottom. Winter - water surface may freeze; the whole water column is near freezing. Spring - Sun warms surface water and when at maximum density it sinks, this process causes mixing. OFF-SHORE BREAKWATER ON COVED BEACH - ANTRIM COUNTY COAST. THEN No Beach in 2020. Breakwater was built Late August 2020 before the 2021 drop in water level. NOW - Grandchildren love broad deep beaches. So do Piping Plovers and other shore nesting birds. Kids caught and released native crayfish, frogs, and fingerlings. Nearshore water is deeper at breakwater and beach. The timeless harmony of natural forces and thoughtful human design prevailed.
